Most homeowners remodel a bathroom rarely enough that they are not sure what to ask. These questions get to the substance quickly.
How do you waterproof a shower?
This is the question that separates contractors. Ask what goes on after the pan and wall board and before the tile. We apply a secondary crack-isolation and waterproof membrane across the entire shower surface, which stops the substrate saturating over time and gives the tile a surface to move on if the house settles.
Who is actually doing the work?
Ask which trades are employees and which are subcontracted. We keep design, project management, tile, paint, drywall and carpentry in-house and even staff our own licensed plumber. Some specialist work, such as stone fabrication or electrical, still calls for outside trades.
Are you licensed, and what does the warranty cover?
North Carolina requires contractors to offer a one year warranty on services performed. Ask what is offered beyond that, and get the licence number.
What is the realistic timeline?
Smaller projects can finish in six weeks or less. Full remodels with structural changes take longer, and custom glass adds two to three weeks after templating. A contractor who quotes a suspiciously short schedule is either omitting the glass or hoping for the best.
What happens when something unexpected turns up?
Mold, rot, damaged materials and backorders are normal parts of remodeling older homes. Ask how changes are priced and communicated before they happen, not after.
